Sunday, July 27 on the racetrack in Loket, Czech Republic, Kiara Fontanesi (Yamaha) confirmed herself World Champion in WMX, the Elite class in women’s motocross. For a few weeks Kiara had shown promise in winning her third World title…and now she has done so.
“Did you see? I kept the promise! I showed up for the last race with only a 4 point advantage over Australian Meghan Rutledge. It was too small an advantage to rest easy. I knew I was going to have to fight to the final metre to take home my third World Championship title. It was hard, but I did it.”
“I raced with determination but I also used my head, pacing my race with Rutledge. In any case the battle for the title had come down to just the two of us. So, thanks to a third place in race 1 on Saturday and the second place in race 2 on Sunday, I closed out the Grand Prix in second place and came in right ahead of her.”
The final classification saw Fontanesi with 255 points, Rutledge with 250. Mission accomplished! The Queen of motocross for the third time in a row is still our very own Kiara Fontanesi.
“I will never forget my first World title, but every victory is a new fantastic thrill. The season got off to a shaky start; I was feeling discouraged by the results, but then I switched gears and made a comeback that race after race brought me back to seize the red table as the leader of the World Series, which I held on to tightly up to the end.”
“Meghan and I had an exciting and fair fight until the end. Off our motorbikes we are even friends. At the end of the race she came to congratulate me and we traded jerseys, this is another beautiful aspect of our sport. I’m living the dream; I’d like to thank my family, my boyfriend, the team and Yamaha, all the friends who support me and my sponsors, including Sidi Sport, which holds a special place. In fact, boots are a fundamental detail for a pilot. Sidi has shared in the joy of all three of these World victories with me. The Sidi Crossfire2 boots, which Sidi dedicated to me with this special, stylish pink graphic just as I like it, kept me company in the race for the title and became a valuable ally.”
“Now I just want to bask in this success and then enjoy a bit of vacation. It’s incredible, up until just a few hours ago I couldn’t wait for this championship to be over. But now I can’t wait to get started on my next adventure…it’s no use, I’m just made that way; it’s impossible for me to stay away from motocross!”
